Project is a creative expansion of “Determination of physical and selective properties of the cod codends types – BACOMA and T90 - and ways of construction improvement” study. Carried out from 25-06-2007 to 30-11-2008.
Szczecin Maritime Academy project “Experimental studies on reduction of underwater discards during Baltic cod fishing„ framework foresee execution of study to improve Baltic cod codends selectivity by introducing important, innovative changes to their construction. New developed solutions will have favourably influence on Baltic cod fishing mortality structure reducing thereby negative pressure of fisheries on maritime environment. Results of this study – innovative technical improvements should help to improve Baltic cod resources by reducing underwater discards.
The objectives of the project are in accordance with CFP and EU regulations. The results will be publicized during international and national symposiums and scientific publications.
They are reasonable prerequisites that live cods escaping codend close to the water surface (during heaving operation), due to big hydrostatic pressure difference suffer swim-bladder damage (barotrauma) and die in short time creating underwater discards.
Selectivity assessment at sea will allow, precisely than before, recognize how many fish escape codend during towing the fishing-gear and additionally during heaving operation.
Additionally study at sea should allow qualification of length and weight structure of caught cod it could help cod stock assessment. Investigate codends construction changes first of all are going to be tested at Model Research Station at Ińsko lake environment and after that during commercial catches at sea.
