On November 20, 2015 in the Senate Hall of the Szczecin Maritime University was held a meeting summarizing the research results of the project "Experimental research on the reduction of discards from fishing undisclosed Baltic cod".
Among the numerous guests were representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, West Pomeranian Branch of the Agency for Restructuring and Modernizations of Agriculture, The Maritime University of Szczecin, West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin, the owners, inspectors from the Regional Inspectorates for Maritime Fisheries and others.
At the beginning of the seminar presented a part of the film "Around fish" produced by TVP Szczecin in 2015, which explained the issues of the project. MSc. Grzegorz Krzemień with the project team, raised the issue of cod to escape while in contact with a trawl net and the scale of losses in the population of cod in fishing time. The narrator of the film also drew attention to the problem of high mortality during trawling and selecting a set of trawl where live cod leaving the bag near the surface (during the trwling), have damaged swim bladders (due to the large hydrostatic pressure difference) and soon die - acting undisclosed recoil.
After the film projection project manager, Prof. Piotr Nowakowski presented the results to improve the selectivity of the Baltic cod sacks through the introduction of significant and innovative changes in their structures. He stressed that new solutions have a beneficial effect on changing the size of Baltic cod fishing mortality, thereby reducing the negative pressure of fishing on the marine environment. Studies on the selectivity of fishing gear at sea allowed to estimate the number of fish leaving the bag during trawling while selecting the trawl. Improved network design has allowed to reduce the number of fish fleeing by 30% during trawling, but about 60% during dialing.
Another speaker, Dr. Eng. Henry Sendlak (ZUT in Szczecin) presented the scope of the research conducted by the project team at Research Station of Model in Insko, including: performance measurement geometry and force measurements test piece fishing gear, the development characteristics of geometric and retaining studied design at varying degrees to fill them fake fishing conduct tests in order to try and verify the efficiency of the innovative elements before using them in the sea.
Dr. Eng. Dorota Pawlos presented the results of morphometric measurements - length and weight caught cod, based on which the condition coefficients were calculated - Fulton and La CREN.
The seminar ended with a lively discussion on the introduction of relevant, innovative changes in the design of bags cod, designed to improve the selectivity of fishing gear and thereby reduce undisclosed discards in Baltic cod being caught.
